Wrymisle, Cradle of Dragons

Timeline of Wrymisle

Pre-History (Before 2000 BCE)

In the beginning, the land of Wyrmisle was wild, untamed, and volatile, shaped by the very forces of the primordial dragons that first arrived. As they began their reign over the land, their very presence ignited the forces of nature. The island trembled beneath the mighty feet of the Primordial Wyrms. Volcanoes erupted violently as Ignis, the fire-breathing dragon of destruction, carved out the Wyrmspine Mountains. Jagged peaks erupting with ash and molten lava. The land, scorched by constant eruptions, was slowly reshaped by the relentless fires that burned through the plains. Both danger and opportunity arose in the fertile lands.

Viridios

Viridios, the dragon of nature and growth, pushed the island’s forests into a rapid expansion. His breath caused the Wan Wood to flourish, growing dense and magical. His magic gave new ecosystems and phenomena that would leave a mark on the island’s climate. This vast forest became a haven for magical creatures, its towering trees creating a perpetual canopy that filtered the sunlight, creating an ever-shifting weather system beneath its cover.

Nyx

Nyx marked the land, his dark influence over the swamps and marshes birthed the Putridlock. These lands became shrouded in darkness and mists, the air thick with humidity and the earth beneath an inhospitable bog. Here, the island’s climate became a stormy, oppressive one. Winds blew constantly, carrying with them the scent of decay and the danger of lurking horrors.

Glacies

In the north, Glacies, the dragon of ice, cast his cold upon the world. His icy breath gave rise to Glacier’s Reach, an eternal winter where blizzards and snowstorms dominated the environment. The landscape here was a stark contrast to the rest of Wyrmisle, where glaciers spread and ice-capped mountains created an imposing barrier against all who would dare traverse their frigid terrain. The northern expanse remained locked in a perpetual winter, with few daring to venture into the frozen wastes.

Aquilon

To the south, Aquilon swept in with powerful winds, shaping the seas and shifting weather patterns. His breath churned the oceans, causing frequent hurricanes, monsoons, and wild storms that battered the southern shores. The constant turmoil of the sea created an unpredictable maritime environment. Aerilon, the dragon of the air, further shaped the winds and skies, guiding them across the plains and cliffs.

These primordial dragons not only shaped the land physically, but their elemental powers infused the island with a turbulent and ever-changing atmosphere, setting the stage for the island’s future battles and conflicts.

Age of Expansion (0 AE – 1,500 AE)

As the dragons grew in strength and power, their reach expanded. The island of Wyrmisle, though still in the midst of upheaval, began to solidify under their rule. The Wyrmspine Mountains became increasingly active, with regular eruptions and tectonic shifts. The once volatile landscape settled into a rhythm of creation and destruction, as lava flows and earthquakes reshaped the island’s contours. These natural forces created deep ravines and valleys, which, over time, became home to the dragons themselves. The land became more hospitable, though the threat of volcanic activity remained ever-present.

Wan Wood stretched ever outward, with Viridios’ influence turning the land into an almost sentient entity. As trees grew taller, some became living guardians of the forest, their branches extending like hands to the sky, their roots burrowing deep into the earth. The weather here fluctuated wildly, with fey storms—mysterious, magical phenomena that could strike without warning—creating shifts in temperature and causing strange, otherworldly weather events. These fey-induced disturbances began to reshape the climate, often leaving patches of the wood blanketed in snow while others basked in unnatural warmth, and thick fogs would occasionally descend, obscuring all vision.

The Putridlock Swamps, under the control of Nyx, grew even darker and more oppressive. The land, long blighted, expanded outward, forming marshlands that swallowed entire regions. Rivers became clogged with rot and decay, while the air became increasingly heavy with moisture and disease. The constant shifting of the waters and the dark influence of the swamps created a perfect environment for creatures of nightmare and shadow to thrive.

The northern territories, where Glacies held sway, continued their descent into perpetual winter. Massive glaciers began creeping farther south, encroaching on the plains, while snowstorms and blizzards came with such frequency that it seemed the land itself had turned against its inhabitants. The Glacier’s Reach remained an impenetrable ice wall, keeping the northern reaches cut off from the rest of the island.

Down in the south, Aquilon’s winds became more unpredictable. While the seas calmed for a time, the winds grew stronger, bringing with them hurricanes and violent monsoons that devastated the coastlines. The once-clear waters of the southern seas became choked with debris and violent waves, reshaping the coastline in a continual cycle. The Shimmering Isles, once peaceful and separated from the mainland, were now battered by the constant pounding of the ocean, their shores receding as the tides changed with frightening regularity.

This age established rapid expansion and the volatile nature of the dragons’ control over the elements. While some areas became more settled, the climate itself remained capricious, with natural events reshaping the landscape at every turn.

Era of Conflict (1,500 AE – 2,000 AE)

The Age of Expansion gave way to a time of strife as the dragons’ conflicts escalated. With the land stabilizing to an extent, the dragons began to clash more violently over their domains. The Wyrmspine Mountains became battlegrounds, as fire and ash filled the air, transforming the region into a war zone. Constant volcanic eruptions and earthquakes marred the landscape, creating massive chasms where entire cities once stood. Lava rivers tore through the land, scorching everything in their path, while firestorms raged across the plains, consuming all that they touched. These forces, combined with the dragons’ battles, reshaped the environment into a world of destruction.

In the forests of Wan Wood, the fey storms grew in intensity as the magical influences of the dragons fueled even greater instability. Trees became twisted into grotesque shapes as the influence of Viridios and the fey storms collided. This created a shifting landscape, where magical barriers would appear and disappear, and strange phenomena made the weather unpredictable. It was not uncommon for one section of the forest to be blanketed in thick fog, while another was subjected to a flash snowstorm.

In the Putridlock Swamps, the chaos of battle amplified the already dark atmosphere. The swamps spread ever outward, swallowing up more land as the corruptive influence of Nyx’s dark magic worsened. Creatures, long buried within the muck and mire, rose again, their forms twisted and mutated by the dark magic that now permeated the swamp. The entire region became a breeding ground for horrors, while the surrounding areas were plagued by poisonous gas clouds and swampy fogs.

The frozen northern regions of Glacier’s Reach saw another shift, as Glacies’ icy winds began to push even further southward, bringing with them waves of deep snowstorms. The glaciers grew ever more aggressive, encroaching on the land and leaving vast swathes of frozen tundra where lush forests once grew. The landscape, once hospitable, now became a perilous wilderness of ice and snow, inhabited only by the hardiest creatures.

Meanwhile, Aquilon and his raging storms left the southern shores in constant turmoil. The seas raged with torrential storms, causing the land to be battered by floods and tsunamis, reshaping the Shimmering Isles into barely recognizable patches of rock. Coastal cities were damaged or totally obliterated, and the seas themselves became even more unpredictable, ensuring that no one ventured too far without fearing the wrath of the ocean.

As the dragons waged war across the island, their powers directly influenced the land itself, creating a continent that was forever changed by their conflict. The environment became as much a battleground as the dragons themselves.

Age of Harmony (2,000 AE – 2,500 AE)

Following the catastrophic conflicts of the previous era, the dragons slowly began to withdraw from their long-fought wars. Wyrmisle, while scarred, entered a time of rebuilding. The Wyrmspine Mountains, though still volatile, saw a decrease in eruptions, and the lava flows calmed, leaving behind rich volcanic soils that began to support new forms of life. The land began to recover, and some regions that had been scorched and destroyed in battle were slowly reborn, though the damage was not easily forgotten.

Wan Wood, under the steady hand of Viridios, began to stabilize. The fey storms became a rarity, and the forest grew into a more predictable, though still magical, place. It remained a wonder, but it was no longer the chaotic and unpredictable landscape it once had been. The weather became more consistent, with gentle rains and temperate winds providing the forest with the necessary elements for growth and regrowth.

The Putridlock Swamps still remained a treacherous, disease-ridden region, but even there, the land began to show signs of life. Nature was slowly reclaiming the swamp, with new plants and creatures slowly evolving in response to the dark energies that had once tainted the area. However, the swamps would never be as hospitable as the rest of the island.

In the north, the frozen regions of Glacier’s Reach began to thaw as the island’s climate stabilized. Ice storms and blizzards became less frequent, and the glaciers, though still a dominating presence, began to recede. The tundra slowly gave way to more hospitable terrain, with some regions now hosting a fragile, yet emerging, ecosystem.

The southern seas, once ravaged by Aquilon’s storms, became calmer as the dragons shifted away from constant conflict. The Shimmering Isles, battered and broken, began to rebuild. Tides slowly stabilized, and coastal weather became less erratic, allowing new life to flourish along the shores. The island’s coastline, still marked by the scars of the storms, began to heal, though the landscape would never return to its original state.

During this age, Wyrmisle began to find a fragile peace, and though the scars of battle remained, the land began to breathe once more. The island was no longer just the domain of the dragons—it was slowly becoming a place where all could live, albeit under the shadow of the titanic forces that once ruled it.

Modern Era (2,500 AE – Present)

Today, Wyrmisle stands as a land that has seen both destruction and rebirth. While the volcanic activity and glacial expansions have slowed, the remnants of past ages still define its landscapes. New generations of settlers have arrived, while the ancient dragons, once lords of the land, have faded into myth, their powers diminished but still felt in the very soil of the island.

Recent Events

The Reign of King Won

A century ago, King Won ascended to the throne of Wyrmisle, and his reign became legendary for achieving the seemingly impossible: taming the dragons of the Wyrmspire Mountains. For generations, dragons had terrorized the land, their fiery breath and mighty wings dominating the skies. But King Won, a monarch of unrivaled charisma and political savvy, managed to form an unprecedented truce with the dragons. This event, known as The Binding of the Wyrms, marked the beginning of a new era for the kingdom. The dragons, once feared rulers, agreed to refrain from meddling in human affairs, retreating to the remote reaches of the mountains. With peace secured between mortals and dragons, King Won focused on solidifying his kingdom’s stability.

One of his most strategic moves was to establish Wan as the capital of Wyrmisle. Situated at the heart of the island, the city became a thriving hub of trade, diplomacy, and culture. Under King Won’s leadership, the kingdom flourished, and the capital became a beacon of hope and prosperity.

The Reign of King Win

However, 75 years ago, King Won passed away, leaving the throne to his son, King Mothlian. King Mothlian inherited a kingdom that was at peace with the dragons, and he continued his father’s legacy of stability. He ruled wisely and diplomatically, maintaining the alliance with the dragons and ensuring the prosperity of the kingdom. King Mothlian’s legacy, however, was also shaped by his three sons—Wan, Wyrn, and Wyn—each of whom would come to inherit different regions of the kingdom, each with their own unique approaches to rule.

The Sons of King Win

Wan, named after the capital, was given control over Wan City. As the heir to the throne, he carried a sense of impartiality, focusing on diplomacy and leaving the matters of court to fate and chance. His rule in the capital emphasized balance and fairness, striving to unite the kingdom under a single banner of peace.

Wyrn, the second son, took control of the southern plains, where important trade routes converged. This region, home to the roads leading from Putridlock, Pinnaveil, and Griffinridge, became the military powerhouse of the kingdom. Under Wyrn’s leadership, the southern plains saw an influx of mercenaries and soldiers from all corners of Hyebrenia, and the region became a formidable military force, with Wyrn emphasizing strength and control.

The youngest of the three sons, Wyn, was entrusted with the northern shores, a region known for its natural beauty and peaceful culture. Wyn’s rule focused on law, fairness, and the pursuit of moral integrity. He attracted many religious followers to his domain, with places like Brazen Abbey and Brackenwall becoming centers of worship and scholarship. Wyn’s focus on peace and justice set him apart from his brothers, but it also made him vulnerable in the growing power struggle for the throne.

Succession Fervor Begins

As the years passed, King Mothlian grew older, and rumors of a succession crisis began to spread. The three brothers, each holding different visions for the future of Wyrmisle, seemed on the brink of conflict. Despite King Mothlian’s attempts to maintain unity, tensions between the brothers grew. The kingdom, once stable, was now on the cusp of division, with each son jockeying for power.

Then, 25 years ago, King Mothlian passed away, and the throne was left to his three sons. Wan, Wyrn, and Wyn all sought to claim the throne, each believing they were the rightful ruler. The peaceful kingdom of Wyrmisle found itself on the brink of civil war.

Wan, with his seat of power in the capital, maintained a diplomatic stance. His ability to stay impartial allowed him to navigate the intricate web of politics, but it also alienated him from his more aggressive brothers. Wyrn, with his control over the military and his stronghold in the southern plains, began to rally mercenaries to his cause. His militaristic nature made him a powerful contender for the throne, but it also meant he would clash with his brothers, especially Wyn, who valued peace above all else.

Wyn, the ruler of the northern shore, focused on maintaining order and law. His peaceful methods and emphasis on fairness made him popular with the people, but it also left him vulnerable in the face of his brothers’ more aggressive tactics. The kingdom was now split, with each son preparing for war.

Dragons Should Not Meddle

Amidst this familial conflict, the dragons, who had once sworn never to interfere in the affairs of mortals, watched from the shadows. Their pact with King Won still held, but it was growing fragile. Tensions among the dragons themselves began to rise, particularly with the emergence of Tavisdet, a blue dragon who was also known by his human guise, Darius Wormwood.

For the next ten years, the struggle for the throne intensified. Wyrn, with his large and powerful army, fought tirelessly to consolidate power. His forces, bolstered by mercenaries, began to challenge his brothers’ rule. Wan, from his position in the capital, worked tirelessly to broker peace, but his impartiality only seemed to further frustrate his brothers. Wyn tried to maintain peace and law, but the escalating violence between the factions made it increasingly difficult to avoid conflict.

Tavisdet’s Betrayal

Unbeknownst to the brothers, Tavisdet—operating as Darius Wormwood—secretly infiltrated Wyrn’s inner circle. He subtly manipulated events, weakening Wyrn’s position and sowing discord among his allies. His ultimate goal was to use Wyrn’s military might for his own purposes, seeking to use the mortal army to wreak havoc on the island. As tensions mounted, it became clear that the future of Wyrmisle was at a crossroads.

Now, in the present day, the kingdom is embroiled in full-scale civil war. King Wyrn, despite his military strength, faces opposition from his brothers, especially Wan, whose diplomatic efforts continue to frustrate his attempts to secure power. Wyn, still holding to his principles of law and peace, remains a beacon of hope for those who long for a just rule, but his influence is increasingly overshadowed by the growing conflict.

In the shadows, Tavisdet watches, ever patient, ready to make his move. His machinations have already started to weaken Wyrn’s forces, and his ultimate goal—to break the truce and bring dragons into the conflict—seems closer than ever. As the brothers battle for control of Wyrmisle, the dragons watch from their mountain lairs, their own ancient plans stirring.
